(02) Deck and outdoor living

Backyard transformation

From an old balcony to an outdoor living area.

The old balcony and pergola came down to make way for an elevated deck under a flat roof on tall timber posts, finished with a glass balustrade. Built for entertaining and everyday living, it looks out over the pool area.

In build order
The back of a two-storey brick house before the job: the old balcony and pergola being stripped by a worker on a ladder, a garden shed, and green waste and sheet offcuts piled on the lawn.

Before

Four tall timber posts standing on a new slab at the back of the brick house, each braced with crossed props, under a deep blue sky.

Posts

The back of the house with the deck boards down and a flat roof up on timber posts and beams, a new stair at the left, bare dirt and patchy lawn in front.

Deck and roof in place

On the finished deck: a bar-height outdoor table and chairs on grey boards, a lounge still in its wrapping, glass balustrade, a timber post and beam, palms and rooftops beyond.

On the deck

The finished deck from the side: the flat roof oversailing on a timber post, a grey privacy wall with a wire screen above, exposed timber joists underneath, an outdoor lounge on the slab and the pool beyond.

Finished, from the side

Looking down from the deck at a rectangular pool with rippling water, pale coping and paving, a strip of turf with two sun loungers and a white planter of cacti against a grey fence.
